L Marks was founded in 2012 by serial entrepreneur Stuart Marks. We take a practical approach to the way we work by tailoring our programmes alongside some of the world’s best known brands including John Lewis, EDF Energy and BMW. As innovation specialists and investors, we aim to build bridges between corporates seeking to innovate and young companies with disruptive tech.

Stuart Marks

Founder & Chairman

Stuart Marks is a serial entrepreneur who has built and sold four businesses over the past 25 years. They have spanned several sectors including CRM, location-based services and digital media. Every company applied innovation to challenge existing business models. Stuart has worked with a diverse and international customer-base including Sainsbury’s, British Airways, Unilever, Vodafone, BMW and various Government agencies across the world. His most recent exit was ITIS Holdings plc in 2011. The company was listed on the LSE and was Europe’s leading provider of real time traffic information and connected car technology and was the first company to commercialise crowd sourced data from GPS devices and mobile phone networks.

Daniel Saunders

Chief Executive

Daniel Saunders leads the L Marks team and is responsible for the strategic development of the company. Trained as a software engineer, he started his career developing the Symbian OS as it was spun out of Psion. Transitioning into finance, Daniel served as a data analyst and financial forecaster before being appointed Chief of Staff for Economic Development at the Israeli Embassy. For over a decade, he has advised numerous multinationals on corporate innovation and startup disruption and similarly has worked with countless startups on developing their businesses, raising funding, and securing clients globally. A keen investor in authentic innovation, Daniel has provided funding to dozens of early-stage companies.

Alexandra Gilbert

Operations Director

As Operations Director, Alex Gilbert is the key contact for all of our existing and new partners, leads on the oversight of day-to-day operations across the programme and scouting teams, whilst also making sure the L Marks team grows alongside our own rapid growth. Alex is an accomplished innovation professional with over six years' experience project managing innovation initiatives across corporate, social enterprise, government and international development settings. Alex originally joined the L Marks team in early 2016 running both JLAB and BMW Innovation Lab and subsequently launched our scouting team.

Liberty Mawhood

Chief Customer Officer

Liberty Mawhood works closely with our corporate partners in the the creation of our programmes. Prior to L Marks, Liberty has worked on a number of different early-stage businesses such as bringing leadership courses to an online audience in China and creating the BAFTA award-winning Disney Animated, an app recognised by Apple as App of the Year when it was released.

Alex Reynolds

Programme Associate

Alex is Programme Associate for the Bupa Blue Table programme. Before joining L Marks, Alex worked for a number of innovation bodies, researching corporate startup collaboration in London and fostering entrepreneurial culture in higher education institutions across Europe. Prior to this he worked for a London based accelerator, co-working space and seed stage investor, giving him great insight into the startup ecosystem.

Annie Butt

HR & Office Manager

As HR and Office Manager, Annie is responsible for all our core HR processes and oversees the day to day running of the London office. Before joining L Marks Annie lived and worked in Melbourne where she had experience of working for a successful online startup, giving her great insight into the needs of growing businesses.

Ben Thomas

Programme Manager

Ben is currently Programme Manager for the BMW Innovation Lab. Prior to L Marks, Ben worked as a project manager for Amey. In 2014 he started his own tech business, creating BluPark, a smart parking solution.

Caroline Komuhangi

Programme Associate

Caroline is Programme Associate on the Travis Perkins BreakThru Programme. Previously she has supported with MDR LAB and the fourth instalment of JLAB, L Marks' flagship programme with the John Lewis Partnership. Before L Marks, Caroline worked in compliance at Deloitte but has always had an interest in social enterprise. She is on the board of the Young Funding network and has helped 100s of social enterprises with their fundraising.

Edward Smith

Portfolio Support Manager

As Portfolio Support Manager, Edward helps startups across L Marks programmes by connecting them to the right external mentors and partners, so they can focus on what they do best. He has worked across L Marks, solving problems for companies like EDF Energy, Mishcon de Reya, DIA, and has spent the last 6 years either building, or helping others build, businesses.

Ella Martin

Head of Programmes

As Head of Programmes at L Marks, Ella has oversight of all programmes from launch through to review and she leads on the startup experience and L Marks support offering. Previously, Ella was Programme Manager at THNK School of Creative Leadership in Amsterdam, supporting corporates and entrepreneurs in becoming innovation leaders. With 7 years’ experience in both corporate and startup environments, she is passionate about innovation and driving entrepreneurial success.

Ellie Gyaurova

Programme Manager

Having previously scouted for L Marks across several programmes, Ellie is now project managing BMW Innovation Lab. As a Startup Scout, Ellie was responsible for finding the best tech startups for John Lewis, IAG, Bupa, Travis Perkins, amongst others. Prior to L Marks, Ellie worked for London-based fintech company Earthport.

Emma Marshall

Programme Manager, Manchester

Emma is Programme Manager for the United Utilities Innovation Lab programme. Prior to joining the L Marks team, Emma was Programme Coordinator at Mahuki, a cultural accelerator at the national museum of New Zealand, Te Papa. She is passionate about new technology and innovation and helping startups to thrive.

Lara Halfon

Startup Scout

Lara is Startup Scout for the EDF Energy Blue Lab. She identifies and approaches the best startups in the market to connect them with our corporate partners and has past experience and a strong passion in technology and entrepreneurship. Lara has also been involved in the Israeli startup ecosystem.

Lara Warren

Programme Manager

Lara is the Programme Manager for EDF Blue Lab. She started working with L Marks as Programme Associate, supporting the startups in both W2 Labs from Wincanton and in intu Accelerate. Lara is passionate about how startups can contribute to their environments through reciprocal relationships and has previously been involved in various social enterprises.

Laura Sanchez Gonzalo

Head of Scouting

Laura has extensive experience in managing innovation projects and supporting companies in the development of international plans. Previously, Laura worked at the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade as an innovation consultant. During her time at L Marks, Laura has also project managed our Capital One, EDF Energy, and Belron projects.

Lavinia Hicks

Programme Manager

Lavinia is Programme Manager for our Blue Lab programme with EDF Energy. She was previously Programme Manager for the fourth instalment of JLAB, L Marks' flagship programme with the John Lewis Partnership. With experience in the fintech space, specialising in innovating traditional accounting firms, she has first hand experience of seeing the benefits of startup and corporate collaboration.

Lorena Palacios

Startup Scout

With a Master's degree in Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management, Lorena has joined the scouting team at L Marks to discover and build strong relationships with startups around the world. She has a background in retail and the start up ecosystem as a Project and Strategy Manager.

Matteo Scarabelli

Head of Investment

As Head of Investment, Matteo ensures we make the smartest investments across all the programmes and also supports our portfolio in their growth. Previously, Matteo was Head of Startup Support, where he leveraged his broad experience of the startup world, drawing on past operational roles at VC-backed startups, and support for numerous startups from due diligence to further investment.

Mina Begum

Scouting Manager

Mina's role at L Marks is to scout and establish relationships with market-leading startups and connect them with brands such as EDF, BMW and IAG. Mina is passionate about working closely with the startup ecosystem, and she has previously worked at different corporate accelerators.

Myrto Lalacos

Programme Associate, Manchester

Myrto started working with L Marks as Startup Support Intern on the JDWorks programme, and is now a Programme Associate for the Sky Betting and Gaming CoLab, and the United Utilities Innovation Lab. For several years, Myrto has been involved in the Manchester startup ecosystem and she aims to help make the North of England the Silicon Valley of the UK.

Nick Richards

Programme Manager

Nick is currently Programme Manager for the Travis Perkins BreakThru programme. Previously he has supported BMW Innovation Lab, Hangar 51, Capital One Growth Labs and Drive with Belron as a Programme Associate. Before joining L Marks, Nick supported the operations and design work of a tech-based property startup and has had a longstanding interest in the london startup scene.

Paloma Muñoz Cano

Programme Manager, Spain

Paloma is Programme Manager for Nexus by DIA, our first programme outside the UK with Spanish retail group DIA. For the last 3 years, Paloma has been linked to the ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship helping companies and public organisations gain access to top talent, ideas and technologies.

Pierre Baisle

Programme Manager

Pierre is Programme Manager for the intu Accelerate programme. Prior to L Marks, Pierre managed an angel investment network in Paris. He also headed up the programme for the Central Research Laboratory, mentoring startups aiming to design, scale up and sell quality hardware products. Pierre also supports and mentors SMEs in France, and is an advisor for several startup support structures projects there.

Prash Lagisetti

Programme Manager

Prash is the Programme Manager for the Arsenal Innovation Lab. He has spent the last 4 years building and working with startups in London and Australia, primarily in travel, Virtual Reality and e-commerce. Prior to his startup experience, Prash spent 11 years as a Private Portfolio Manager in Australia and London. He also holds Law and Commerce degrees.

Tom Somers

Programme Manager

Tom is Programme Manager for the Bupa Blue Table programme, our first health-focused programme, and is our health and social programme lead. Previously, he was Programme Manager for HouseMark evolve, the UK social housing sector’s first ever startup accelerator. Prior to joining L Marks he worked in a number of policy and finance roles in Government.

Tom van Mourik

Programme Manager, Leeds

Tom is Programme Manager for the Sky Betting and Gaming CoLab programme. For the last three years he has worked for a privately owned startup portfolio in London. Previous to this Tom lived in Brussels and Shanghai working for NGOs and a Corporate Social Responsibility consultancy.

Our startup support team are responsible for ensuring each of the startup teams are happy, and making the most of the experience. These guys help facilitate goals, track progress, manage relationships with mentors both internally and externally as well as build an ambience our startups are comfortable with.
